6 Simple Style Ideas for Busy Mothers

Today's post is a guest post from my lovely friend Lena Penteado.

Lena specialises in style advice for busy women, which is exactly what I need since having my girls. One thing I'm not naturally good at organising is my style - I tend to just forget about my hair & clothing and leave myself till last when I get ready, which often results in no make up and boring hair!

Since meeting Lena and subscribing to her email newsletter I've been inspired to make more effort with myself and am loving feeling pretty and modern again. If this sounds like something you need help with too, pop on over to her site after you read this article :)

If you’re a mother, I know you’re busy! You need to juggle work, house chores, taking care of the children and in the end there’s no time left for you.

But you know you need to take care of yourself or you’ll end up tired, cranky and unhappy. And that includes taking care of your image and style. If you neglect your image then you won’t like what you see in the mirror everyday and you will start to feel bad about yourself. But if you make an effort to look good, you’ll feel better!

The good news is that taking care of your image and style can be very easy. Read on below to learn 6 simple tips to help you look stylish everyday, quickly and easily.

6 Simple Style Ideas for Busy Mothers

1. Invest in Fashionable Basics

Your wardrobe should have lots of basic pieces in neutral colors (at least 70%). Basic pieces are great because they never go out of fashion and you never get tired of them. And they’re very easy to combine. They form the backbone of your wardrobe.

What are the basics I’m talking about?

For looking stylish, invest in what I like to call Fashionable Basic Pieces (these are the current basic pieces and not the classic version).

Then combine the fashionable basics with the pieces you already have in your wardrobe.

Here are some fashionable basics to try:

White or nude large shirt: wear it with pants or skirts (it’s not a classic shirt – it’s a large shirt, you can see one in the picture below).

Simple large or medium knit in neutral color - navy / beige / black / grey: It’s a great option because it’s current, comfortable and you can wear it with everything.

Skinny jeans: skinny jeans make you look instantly stylish and younger. A dark color is more formal and disguises large hips. Avoid wearing skinny pants with tight tops.

Leggings: Leggings are very comfortable and great to spend time with the kids. Combine them with a large feminine blouse for a casual-chic look or with a large t-shirt for a casual look. The best ones are black or gray.

Slim Pants: Slim pants are a great option for work. They are the new classic trousers.

Booties: Camel booties look great with all colors. The booties in the image below are super comfortable and trendy.

2. Accessorise

Put on some accessories to add interest to basic pieces. Scarves are great because they keep you warm and add style. You can also wear earrings, necklaces, bracelets or rings, choose whatever you like the most. If you want to invest in accessories, start with your bag and shoes, then go for scarves and jewellery.

3. Your Hair is KEY

Keep your hair in good condition – if you can’t go to the hairdresser regularly, one of the best time investments you can make for looking great is learning how to style your hair at home. Check out You tube, there are lots of free videos that teach how to style different types of hair - or ask your hairdresser.

4. Go for very simple makeup

If you don’t have much time or patience for makeup just apply concealer on the dark areas of your eyes. It instantly makes you look well rested. You can also add some bronzer and/or blush, black mascara and you’re ready to go. Or you can also apply some lip gloss or lip moisturiser. And if you want more coverage, try tinted moisturiser. It’s very easy to apply and it gives you a healthy glow.

5. Choose the Right Trendy Pieces

If you like to buy trendy pieces, choose the ones that are easy to wear. Right now, try coloured skinny jeans or high- top sneakers. They are fun, very easy to wear and they’re also comfortable to play with the kids. They also give you a very trendy look.

6. Are you having fun yet?

Style is also about having fun! So have fun with your clothes, try new pieces, take some fashion risks! Show your personality. And if you’re walking down the street and get a criticizing look, be happy. That just means someone’s noticing and if he/she doesn't like it, somebody else will!
