How to declutter sentimental items

Decluttering sentimental items can be really hard because of the emotion that goes along with it!

You may be attached to the item because of the memory that goes with it, or you might feel a sense of responsibility to your family to keep these items.

But if your home isn't big enough to showcase these items and take really good care of them, then it can create more stress & guilt rather than provide happy memories..

So it's important to make a decision on whether or not it's realistic for you to keep all of your sentimental items.

It's not an easy decision, but I have a couple of tips that should help :)

In a nutshell:
  • Remember the item is more about the memory and story behind it rather than the item itself.
  • You can still tell the story or enjoy the memory by keeping a select few items instead of everything.
  • Predetermine a number of items you can keep. Forexample, you may not be able to keep all of your family handed down crockery, glassware and cutlery, but maybe you can keep the crockery, or maybe keep 2 glasses out of a set of six.
  • Try offering the rest to other family members. Maybe someone has a favourite piece they wish they were given but doesn't want to risk offending you by asking you to give it to them..
