How To Start A Blog

I get a lot of questions about blogging and how I got started, so this post is for all of you looking for an organised approach to starting your own blog!

So, how do you start a blog?

I have two blogs: A personal "mummy" blog and this one here at Beautifully Organised.

When I first started blogging, I had to wing it. I didn't even really know the basics. I was just reading someone else's blog one day and noticed a link at the top of the page that said something like 'Click here to create your own blog'.

So I clicked. And I started my journey of blogging, learning as I went along.

I love it. My blog has been an amazing tool that let's me use my organising skills in a creative way. It's led to well paid, virtual work that I can do from home while my kids nap or play. I'd be lost without it :)

But there's a lot of technical stuff to figure out when you start blogging, and if you're not experienced with it, you'll find a lot of your time disappears quickly while you try to figure it out.

My experience building my blogs?

It took FOREVER. I spent hours - three or four hours a night for months, Googling things like:

  • "How to set up a subscription option for my blog"
  • "Which gadgets do I really need for my blog"
  • "Is Wordpress better than Blogger?"
  • "How to get people to read my blog"
If only I had someone who had already been through this themselves and would tell me in a simple way so I could just get started.

There was nothing like that then, But there is now.

My friend Louisa, who blogs at Louisa Claire and runs Brand Meets Blog, has written an ebook that answers the questions we all have when we decide to start blogging.

If you have ever wondered about what to name your blog, how to physically set a blog up (and which system to use), and how to get people to read your blog - then you need to read this book before you begin.

I'm great at blogging about my organising passion and helping busy mums make life easy, but I'm not great at the theory stuff behind blogging. Louisa is.

This book is an ebook, which means you download it immediately after your payment and read it from your computer or iPhone. It costs $8, and I think it's worth at least 4x that.

If you're a regular reader here at Beautifully Organised, you'll know I believe in making life as easy as possible :)

So if someone had told me three years ago that if I gave them $8 they would save me 3 hours a night of research and learning over a few months, I would have no problem paying it.

Actually, I still have no problem paying it - I bought it myself when it launched recently, and after all my blogging experience, it still taught me things I didn't know :)

I really believe How To Start A Blog is the perfect tool for you when you start blogging, so I'd love to shout three of you a copy.

  1. First in first served.. :)

5 Things Every Blog Needs is what I would like to know!! I've been blogging for just under a year and the last 4 months my blog has exploded in a wonder of new likers and followers and I am so happy of where I am.. just need to know what I am missing!!

Think this is a book everyone should read.. new bloggers or those who have been blogging for years!

  2. I'm new to reading blogs but have quickly become addicted. I love the idea of writing my own blog to share my story and document our journey through parenthood ... something that not only friends and family (and dare I say ... bloggers/readers that I don't yet know) would be able read but also my children as they grow up. I'm a bit of a perfectionist though and seem to be stumped on finding the "perfect" name which is stopping me in my tracks. I think this ebook might just be what I need to get my started on my first blogging adventure!

    1. Finding the name was a tough one for me too Mel, it's such a personal decision :)

    2. hehe finding a name is tough.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my name.. Delightfully Tacky Lil Squirts.. because I love Tacky things and I call my children my lil squirts.. however..

the google search engine pulls my title into so VERY unique searches..

pick wisely and keep writing!! :)

  3. The chapter on how to setup a blog would be most beneficial to me as it would, I believe, just like you save me hours researching this information. I have been considering blogging for quite some time but, as a single parent, just do not have the hours for the research required to commence. I think if I can just 'do it' with this assistance it will give me the incentive to move forward with it. Very excited to have found such a weapon. Thank you.

    2. There's nothing more frustrating then spending hours on something and then finding out there was a quicker, easier way! This way you could just focus on the fun stuff :)

  5. I would have to say tips & tricks. I am like you I can spend hours searching the net on gadgets, templates, HTML codes....this ebook would be a fantastic time saver for me

  6. What wonderful timing that I should see this competition advertised! Today is the first day of my month long leave. I am committed to creating space for myself, to see what arises for me that will help to inform the direction I wish to take my life in. My desire is to create greater 'flow' and congruence across the different facets of my life. The idea of starting a blog as part of this process has been lingering in the back of my mind for some months now. I would love the opportunity to explore this further, therefore 'Setting up your blog' seems a great place to start. Thank you for the chance to enter.
