3 shortcuts I use to make life easier (when no-one's looking)

I want to share something with you that I feel really strongly about - something I want every busy mum to know.

Being organised is not about being perfect.

In fact, LIFE is not about being perfect. Life should be EASY and FUN.

I say this because I get lots of lovely emails from Mums who, from what I see, are wonderful women. They care for their families, they work hard (paid and unpaid work), they have great manners & treat people well, and they're amazing role models to their kids.

One thing a lot of these emails have in common is they mention something along the lines of "I wish I was as good as.." or "I wish I was better at.." or "I wish I could do it all perfectly.. like other Mums".

I think that's a lot of pressure to have on your shoulders (or whatever the saying is).

I haven't met anyone yet who is perfect. I know I'm not!

I don't mean that in a bad way, either. I just think it's about perspective. I think there's no perfect way to keep house, no perfect way to parent, no perfect way to do anything - because all of us are in different situations. We have different lives, different influences, different backgrounds.. different everything.

I don't think we should aim to do something perfectly - or even "as good as..." others. I think we should focus on doing what's right for us. What makes us happy.

My goal in life is to be happy. For me, that means finding easier ways to do every day things in order to free up my time for the things I love - hanging out with my family, going to the movies, cooking, napping, reading. It means using little tips & tricks to reduce the need for me to remember everything - I have a terrible memory, and being organised means I don't have to rely on it.

I want that feeling you get when you're on holidays - that sense of peace, like you have all the time in the world. That kind of lazy, happy feeling. I know life isn't like that all the time, but the majority of it? Yep, that's what I'm aiming for.

So I use little shortcuts / life hacks / tips & tricks to make life easier. Some of them are probably a bit daggy, but, in the spirit of not being perfect, I'm happy to share them with you:

  1. Before I hang my washing, I put on an apron and fill the pocket with pegs so I don't have to walk back and forth to the peg basket and get new pegs with every piece of clothing. It's way faster, I swear :) if you don't have an apron? Just put the pegs on your clothes ;)
  2. I use a spray on moisturiser after my shower so it only takes 3 seconds to take care of my skin (if you ever try this though, take my advice - stand on a towel so the floor doesn't get dangerously slippery!)
  3. I keep a little post it note in my kids nappy bag that has a list of everything I would normally pack into the bag - so I can repack it quickly and not worry about forgetting anything.
Those are three shortcuts I use - what are yours? Share away - the less perfect, the better!

  1. Great post Marissa, agree being organised is far from Like your tip about the pegs on the clothes...I just leave the pegs on the line ...hehe

    1. Thanks Jen! Pegs on the line is an even easier way, good on you!

  2. Heya, new to your blog! I'm striving to be perfect I think... I used to not do anything unless I could do it perfectly and just ignore the mess (I'm brilliant at just not even seeing it :P). I've changed though! I'm trying to just plod away at what I can. I'd still like that perfectly clean home though!

The best thing I've found with pegs is to hang a peg bag over my neck. It is very handy to put it out, and takes minutes to get washing in! HTH! xxx

    1. Hi Sarah! Thanks for your lovely comment :) Peg bag is a great idea! I'm thinking of looking for a peg apron too, save my clothes a bit :)

  3. Love your blog so far!!
